A Penny For My Thoughts

Who’s Gonna Drive You Home Tonight?

By Paul Wein

In October of 2002, the national average price for a gallon of gasoline was $1.45 per gallon. Today, just three years later and after a “war” that has given our “President” control of Iraq’s oilfields – the average price of gasoline is $2.23 per gallon. But here in New York, I saw a Sunoco station selling premium gasoline for an unbelievable $2.79 per gallon – and a station in Rancho Mirage, California has gone as high as $2.91 a gallon.

How high is the price of a gallon of gasoline going to get? And what is “President” Bush going to do about it?

Five years ago, when George W. Bush was running for President, he pledged to keep oil prices low and to win passage of legislation to begin more domestic energy production. But, like everything else he has promised – he has not delivered. In fact, gas prices have skyrocketed since he stole control of this country – and the soaring oil and gasoline prices are beginning to take a toll on our economic growth…

…and the worst is yet to come.

Traditionally, the Summer season is the time of year when gas prices reach their highest levels – and here it is only April – and gas prices are already flirting with $3 per gallon. So what is the price of gas going to be when everyone is ready to take their Summer road trips? Because now, thanks to “President” Bush, it costs as much to fill up a Hummer H2 as it does for a one-way ticket from New York City to Tampa, Florida.

Continuing his relentless mission of destroying our country, “President” Bush has made two decisions this week that are as stupid as he is. The first was deciding not to tap into our country’s emergency oil reserve – which is currently at 700 million barrels. He said that he would only do so, “in a national crisis.”

Excuse me – but what do you call this?

The second brilliant idea “President” Bush had was to press the Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia to boost oil production, which he foolishly believes will lower the price of gasoline. “I’ll be talking to our friends about making sure they understand that if they pinch the world economy too much, it’ll affect their ability to sell crude oil in the long run.”

Don’t you mean your friends?

If we have 700 million barrels of oil in our reserves, and enough oil in Alaska to last us a lifetime, why on Earth are we relying on the Saudis to provide us with oil? In the last year, the price of a barrel of crude oil has risen by 40%. And worse, thanks to “President” Bush invading Iraq – most Persian Gulf oil producing nations don’t even want to deal with us. So basically, we have no choice but to once again rely on Bush’s buddies in Saudi Arabia to bail us out.

I wonder – who is really in control of this country?

“Today we’re living in a shanty.
Today we’re scrounging for a meal.
Today I’m stealing coal for fires.
Who knew I could steal?
We’d like to thank you: Herbert Hoover,
for really showing us the way.
We’d like to thank you: Herbert Hoover,
you made us what we are today.
Prosperity was ‘round the corner.
The cozy cottage built for two.
In this blue Heaven that you gave us.
Yes! We’re turning blue!
They offered us Al Smith and Hoover.
We paid attention and we chose.
Not only did we pay attention,
we paid through the nose.”
