A Penny For My Thoughts

“This Is The Second Notice That The Factory Warranty On Your Vehicle Is Expiring...”

By Paul Wein

All of us get calls from telemarketers. Some ask us if we want a credit card with a “guaranteed fixed rate.” Others offer us “pre-approved” loans – and others promise car loans, mortgages and other “unbeatable” offers. But of all the telemarketers that have called me in my life – nothing is as infuriating as when I pick up my cell phone, only to hear…

“This is the second notice that the factory warranty on your vehicle is expiring...”

At least twice a day, from different numbers covering all fifty states, I pick up only to hear this recording. Two things frustrate me to no end about these calls: One, I do not own a vehicle; and two – when I press two to speak to a representative and proceed to tell them that I do not own a vehicle and wish they would stop calling me – they simply hang up.

One time I got a call from them, I reached a representative and begged them not to hang up. “Why would I do that Sir?” the person asked. It was at that moment I said, “I do not own a vehicle and wish…”

…and was hung up on.

Besides the fact that this company is, as we say in Brooklyn, “Beating up my cell phone minutes” – they are also wasting my time – and raising my blood pressure. Working for the Army, I get calls from colleagues all over the country. So when I see a call from another state – I have to pick it up – because it could be someone I work with.

But alas, four out of five times – it is this evil, remorseless company.

I have started to research this company. First, I asked colleagues if they ever received these calls. A few said yes – and one said that she got them daily for two years. Next, I “googled” them – and was truly amazed at what I found.

After hitting “search” – the first thing I found was this on a blogger’s website called Cameo’s Livejournal:

“The company making this call with an auto dialer is a known scam outfit. They spoofed phone numbers of victims all the time. I’ve done a lot of research of this company. Actually, there are several affiliated companies, owned by the same people that try to scam innocent victims. One scam is about auto warranties. Their MO is the same. The use an auto dialer, and call thousands of random numbers. They have no regard to the do not call lists. Your demands or complaints are worthless. They will continue to call you. They will not remove you from their call lists.

If they call about a car warranty, the message says something as, ‘This is the second notice on your extended vehicle warranty. Press one now to speak to a representative...’

YOU MUST REPORT THEM TO THE FEDERAL COMMUNICATIONS COMMISSION!

If everyone that received a call from these low-life scumbags does the same, then the combined action of thousands of us can stop these crooks from scamming innocent people out of money. You may also try to write your congress person.”

I’m with her.

I then found another:

“Same factory warranty scam. I chose to ‘speak’ with someone and got ‘Judy.’ When I mentioned that they were violating federal law by contacting a person on the do not call list – they hung up immediately. I.E. If they were not aware before – they are now!!! Interesting enough same type of calls are now coming in on our cellphones. We need to capture and get some prison time for the violators.”

And another:

“I run a business from my home. So, we have many phone lines. A fax number, CallVantage with 2 lines. 5 cell phones, and 2 SkypeIn numbers. Every line has been called at least 6 times in the last two weeks.”

Yes – and another:

“Received a recorded ‘notice’ that the factory warranty on my vehicle ‘may’ be expired, and it’s not too late to respond now. We receive these daily, and every time it says ‘this is the final call before we close your file.’ Every time I press 2 to be removed to no avail.”

And this company is still allowed to do this because…?

Do you get these calls? If you do, join my crusade…

…and make them expire!
