A Penny For My Thoughts

“Every time I look at you, I think man a little me.
Just like me, wait an see gonna be tall…
…makes me laugh – ‘cause you got your dad’s ears and all.”

By Paul Wein

Eight years ago today, a creature no larger then my hand walked into my house – and in less than a second – permanently wrapped himself around my heart. And today – he is still with me – and the bond we have is as strong as the eight years we have spent together…

…I am, of course – talking about my Beavis.

All this time, he has been the best son this world has ever seen. But in the last year-and-a-half – he has been even better. As of late, he has learned how to open doors, to communicate without saying a word, to help me with my work things in the morning – and to actually say the word “no.” The relationship we have is truly amazing, and I would not trade it for the world. Although he is, in fact, a cat – to me – he is the personification of everything I would want a human child to be. He runs to the door and kisses me when I get home from work, he brings me his toys when he wants to play with them – and he climbs into bed with me at night and sleeps in my arms.

I have loved watching him grow up all these years and discover new things. One of my favorite thing he has recently done is become “King Of The Mountain.” To clarify, he expressed an interest in climbing to the top shelf of Julie’s closet a while back – and with us helping him up there – we gave him that opportunity. But about a month ago, we looked all over the house and could not find him – only to discover that he made himself “King Of The Mountain” all by himself – and still have no idea how he got up there.

This is the first birthday he has had since Julie and I have been married. Although he still gets feisty when she picks him up – Julie is his “Mommy” now. Yes, they fight when he uses the bathroom floor as a toilet – but you can tell that he loves her. I have tried to get him to love her more – but there are many more years for that.

So here is to Beavis’ eighth birthday. I hope there are many, many – many – more to come.

Happy Birthday Beavis. Daddy loves you buddy.

“I would die for you.
Climb the highest mountain.
Baby – there’s nothing I wouldn’t do.”
