Snow Party For Me
By Paul Wein
So far this year, I have attempted to throw three parties – a New Year’s Eve party, a birthday party for myself, and an “I’m Still Alive” party. I say attempted because for the third time in three parties – snow is threatening to either deplete my guest list or force me to cancel the party altogether.
It’s no secret that I hate snow. I hate it because it astounds me how frozen water can cause so much inconvenience, annoyance – and problems. When it snows, taxi fares are doubled, streets and sidewalks become sheets of ice – and my parties get ruined because those who were planning on coming to my parties decide to cancel because they don’t want to drive in bad weather. So the one hundred people I invite become thirty or forty that actually show up. While that still may be a good crowd – its bad when you look forward to all of your friends getting their party on and they can’t because of snow. After this happening to me for the third time in a row – I am half expecting to throw a party in June and have it cancelled because of snow.
This Saturday, I planned to throw my “I’m Still Alive” party to commemorate the fact that I made it through my heart surgery losing only one more of my rapidly depleting lives and keeping the rest. So I invited everyone I know and planned to have food, drink and fun – but now that the skies covered the ground with three inches of snow and plan to drop another few more inches this Friday – my party will once again fall victim to Old Man Winter.
Honestly, I was going to cancel the party – but I have decided against it. I am sick of the weather dictating my social life. I am tired of having to check The Weather Channel before I can decide if I want to throw a party or not – and I am fed up with having to recall everyone I invited to my parties and asking them if they are still coming. So I will stand up to Old Man Winter and throw my party anyway. If the snow must fall – then so be it – but I refuse to let snow ruin my party once more.
So if you have nothing to do one weekend and see that its snowing – come to my house – chances are I am throwing a party.
