A Penny For My Thoughts

Ooh, My Head

By Paul Wein

Of all the different types of pain that the human body experiences, I don’t think any of them compare to a headache. And while having a headache is terrible – waking up with one is even worse.

I had the unfortunate pleasure of waking up with a headache this morning and I have to tell you, it makes functioning during the day very difficult. If I had any other type of pain – from a stomach ache to a leg cramp – I would have an easier time getting through the day. But when I have a headache, it makes me want to do nothing but crawl under the covers and not come out until my head feels better.

I don’t just get regular headaches – I get migraines. Sometimes I get them so bad that I have no choice but to stop everything that I am doing and take a sleep aid until I pass out because I can’t stand the pain from the headache. The headaches I get sometimes hurt so bad its like I am wearing a baseball cap of pain that I can’t take off.

As expected with our medicine addicted world, there are plenty of over the counter regimens to relieve headaches. And while nothing completely gets rid of my headache, the one thing that works like a miracle on me is a strange concoction that I accidentally discovered.

I once had a headache that was so bad my hair actually hurt. In addition to the painful headache, I also had a stomach ache. So I took four Excedrin for the headache along with Alka Seltzer for the stomach ache. To my surprise – due to the aspirin and caffeine in the Excedrin combined with the rush of aspirin from the Alka Seltzer – my headache was gone in a half hour. Since that amazing discovery – which to me is more important then the day someone realized that chocolate and peanut butter are a great combination – I have used this one-two punch to combat the killer headaches that far too often plague my existence – like the one I currently have.

I hope that my headache goes away soon, but more importantly – I hope that one day the scientists that are supposed to be finding cures for the world’s ailments find one for the headache – because they really are a pain.
