A Penny For My Thoughts

Now I Know How It Feels To Be Written About

By Paul Wein

Besides writing about myself and my life in this column, I have also written many columns about other people. Each time I write a column about someone, they always told me that what I wrote really touched them – and that they will cherish the words I wrote for the rest of their lives. While I am always appreciative when someone enjoys what I wrote about them – I never knew exactly how they felt because I have never had something written about me – until recently.

Many of the South Park Booster Club members are loyal readers of my column, and since the Booster Club is such a big part of my life – both the Digest and it’s members are mentioned in my column on a regular basis. One of the first people I wrote about was Montel. Montel was one of the Digest members that I began speaking with outside of the Digest – and has become such a good friend – that she is currently at my house vacationing away from home just as I did at her house for the Fourth of July. After being mentioned in several of my columns, Montel wrote a few about me. As I read the words that she wrote about me, I was very moved that she felt that way and was so touched that someone felt strongly enough about me to put their feelings on paper.

Besides Montel, Arthur, who is also someone that I began talking to apart from the Digest – and who is also currently at my house – also recently wrote a column about me called, “A Friend From Across The Pond”. In his column, he describes the friendship that he and I have built despite the fact that we are on other sides of the planet – and how friendship is just what we need at this crucial time in human history.

While I am very appreciative and moved by the columns that Montel and Arthur have written about me – it was the song that Dan wrote called Old Friends I Just Met that brought tears to my eyes. The song is not about me, but rather about the South Park Convention we attended. But the title of the song is the same as the column I wrote about the Convention – and the words of the song portray the same thing my column does – happiness that new friendships were made miles away from home – and sadness that the trip has to end.

Hearing that song and reading those columns really made me so thankful that I have such good friends – and finally showed me what it feels like when someone writes something about you. And now that I know how it feels to have something written about me – I will continue to write about others – and hopefully bring them as much joy as Montel, Arthur and Dan have brought me.
